To estimate the duration of a renovation, it is important to distinguish between the different phases of a comprehensive interior design project: design, execution, and furnishing.
In the design phase, the space and the needs of the people who will live there are analyzed in detail. This is the time to understand your needs and the life you envision in each space, as well as to seek inspiration and references, to draw up plans for the new and optimal layout of your home and select materials and finishes. This initial phase typically lasts, on average, about 3 months.
This is followed by the execution phase, which will depend on the scope of the work to be carried out and the trades involved. On average, this phase usually lasts about 6-10 months for homes between 100 and 150 m2.
In this phase, quotes are received from the construction company and the various trades. We review each item, adjusting as necessary without compromising the design. We establish a realistic execution schedule and align all teams before commencing.
In any case, execution times are determined at the beginning of the project. And a significant part of your interior designer’s work involves coordinating the work of the trades, supervising its execution through regular site visits, and ensuring that deadlines are met, overcoming any obstacles and setbacks that may arise during the construction process.
Finally, we have a third phase: the furnishing, lighting, and decorative styling stage, which usually overlaps with the end of the execution phase, so that both conclude almost simultaneously. In this phase, we are responsible for selecting furniture pieces and luminaires, designing them to measure (if necessary), and coordinating everything to give coherence to the ensemble. We develop a complete proposal with balanced combinations of colors, materials, and volumes. We also manage all merchandise purchases, organize deliveries by suppliers, personally supervise installations by third parties, and carry out the decorative staging of each environment.

In summary, and as a conclusion, we can estimate that a comprehensive renovation typically has a duration of about 10 months on average.
Finally, you must also consider the time you spend deciding on materials, finishes, etc. To avoid unnecessary delays, we recommend that when making decisions, you fully trust your interior designer, who will provide you with the professional advice you need to make confident choices.
How can your interior designer help you accelerate renovation timelines?
The purpose of the interior designer is to create unique, personal, and functional environments and to achieve the best possible layout for each room. They aim to create spaces that convey warmth and well-being to those who inhabit them.
To achieve this goal, the interior designer relies on the assistance of third parties to execute the necessary renovation works. Therefore, the renovation itself is not the interior designer’s ultimate goal, but rather the necessary means to materialize the projected design.
The interior designer fulfills a dual function of advice and supervision, as they are responsible from design to the final delivery of the project, advising you on everything you need and planning, coordinating, and supervising each of the project phases to ensure it progresses on time and as planned.
As an interior designer, in my projects, before commencing the execution works, I plan the task schedule with the construction company and/or involved trades. While they execute the works, all work is carried out under my close supervision to ensure it faithfully reflects the project I have designed for my client.
Once construction begins, I maintain direct and daily contact with the construction company and conduct regular site visits to review the progress of the work, its correct development, and to verify compliance with the schedule.
There is no doubt that the work carried out by the construction company and/or trades is fundamental for the correct execution of the interior design project, both in terms of quality and adherence to deadlines. Therefore, I always recommend my clients not to hesitate in choosing trusted professionals of undeniable technical solvency.
